Victoria's version
“I ’m in my 28th-floor apartment of a multi-tenant NYC building and feel scared and overwhelmed. As MBC patients we’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. But who ever expected that this virus would be that other shoe? I have a pleural effusion which undoubtedly makes me high risk. Do I stay barricaded in my apartment? Is it safe for me to take an elevator? I am lucky in that I have a large circle of MBC friends who will understand my fears. But what about so many of our sisters who even under normal circumstances feel isolated? This is why we need a dedicated MBC helpline staffed by MBC peers. SHARE has such a helpline but it can’t function without knowledgeable and compassionate volunteers. Let’s create a huge virtual circle of friends that provide immediate support to everyone who needs it. You are the right people to do it. Please consider becoming a helpline volunteer or a peer.”
Ann's Version
Processing the coronavirus emergency that is bombarding us from all angles has me on edge. It's not unlike the fear that enveloped me upon being diagnosed in 2014 with MBC (eleven years after my early stage 1 diagnosis in 2003). During these past almost 6 years, I've thankfully found incredible support from others living with MBC. Some I've met locally at the hospital infusion area, and many others through social media here on FB. We've even had conversations (multiple times!) over FaceTime. Through those connections, I've become a volunteer for SHARE, which is a national cancer support organization based in NYC that offers support for those of us living with MBC. Even though I live on the other side of the country, I am still able to help others who have no one else to turn to...and are calling in to the SHARE national MBC helpline. SHARE IS SEEKING ADDITIONAL MBC VOLUNTEERS! I know that all of us here in this FB group truly know what its like to feel scared and alone. Are you someone who can reach out and provide much needed support to someone else who has no one they can comfortably turn to? Those are the callers calling in on SHARE's national MBC helpline. Please contact Victoria at SHARE to learn more about how you can help. Details in image below. I have been given approval for this volunteer request by Admin...I didn't want to break any group rules by posting without permission.
