DO ask all callers for their name, phone number and/or email address, and enter this information into the Database along with a synopsis of your conversation.

DO offer all callers the option of a Follow-Up Call from you, a Peer Call, and/or a Support Group.

DO check the Helpline voicemail, for new and saved messages, at the beginning of the shift and periodically afterwards.

  2. Enter *101

  3. Enter 8005 # (The extension for TalkMets)

  4. Enter PIN number 1234#

DO erase all voicemail messages after you have made a call. Only leave a vm message in the system if you have not been able to contact a caller and would like the next scheduled volunteer to try calling the originator of the vm.

DO set up an alternative free cell phone number for calls and texting using Google Voice (see below) or any other provider of your choice

DON'T give away your personal phone number to a client. You will be tempted. Don't do it. It is against SHARE's policy. If asked, always tell them to call the Helpline and ask for you.

Some volunteers communicate with their regulars via personal email. That is a good option if you just want to touch base from time to time and don't care about who has your email.

DON'T text any SHARE client from your personal phone. Use Google Voice instead (see below)

DON'T make a call from your personal number with a caller ID visible. Always block your number with *67 before dialing or call from your Google Voice.
